Welcome to Tuckahoe

Tuckahoe is a delightful village in the town of Eastchester, one of Westchester County’s best-kept secrets. Just under one square mile in size, it offers a walkable community where both residents and visitors can explore its inviting streets. Savor Tuckahoe’s welcoming atmosphere, where excellent shops and acclaimed restaurants provide enjoyment for all ages.

The village is defined by its strong sense of community and passion for volunteerism, from annual road races to town improvement projects led by the Tuckahoe Beautification Association. With an extensive public library, community center, and beautifully maintained parks, Tuckahoe is a wonderful place to call home.

History

In 1664, English settler Thomas Pell established a farming community in Tuckahoe, which thrived until the 1800s when Tuckahoe’s marble quarries transformed the village into an industrial hub. The prized white marble was shipped across the country, helping to build landmarks such as the New York Public Library, the U.S. Capitol, and the Washington Monument.

Over time, manufacturing industries followed, and Tuckahoe evolved into the vibrant residential community it is today, blending rich heritage with modern village life.

Transportation

Tuckahoe is conveniently located between Manhattan and White Plains, only 20 miles north of New York City. The village is served by two train stations, Crestwood and Tuckahoe, providing direct access to Grand Central Terminal via Metro-North’s Harlem Line.

Recreation

Look no further than the Tuckahoe Community Center for your daily recreation. This family-friendly venue features programs and activities for all interests, from Open Gym time for sports enthusiasts to rental space for workshops, birthday parties, art exhibits, and more.

Experience the Generoso Pope Center, Tuckahoe’s Italian-American culture center, which offers programs for the whole family, or enjoy community events such as the Easter Egg Hunt and Oktoberfest.

Nature & Conservation

From the community garden, where residents can grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers, to the annual Riverkeeper Sweep along the Bronx River, residents often participate in conservation initiatives to keep their local parks and waterways clean. The Tuckahoe Environmental and Sustainability Committee also promotes recycling and sustainable practices, helping ensure a greener future for the village.

Historical Sites

Tuckahoe is home to the historic Ward House, inhabited by Eastchester Town Supervisor and revolutionary Stephen Ward. Located on White Plains Road, the original home was burned in 1778, in retaliation for Ward’s patriotism, before being rebuilt by Jonathan Ward, Stephen’s son, in the late 1790s.

Today, the house serves as a memorial to the local hero, who witnessed the first reading of the Declaration of Independence, and as a testament to those who fought bravely in the American Revolution.

Shopping & Dining

Tuckahoe offers a lively mix of dining and shopping close to home. Local favorites include Il Gusto for classic Italian fare or Spice Village for South Indian cuisine, but Tuckahoe provides a variety of restaurants for all tastes. Shoppers can browse antiques and consignment treasures or take advantage of the major shopping centers in nearby towns, making Tuckahoe a convenient and flavorful destination.
