A suburban town in Westchester County’s south end, Pelham is comprised of two independently incorporated villages: Pelham Village and Pelham Manor. The historic community is bordered by New York City, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, and Long Island Sound. Each village boasts a robust retail and shopping area, public services, and a variety of restaurants.
 
Pelham, which is home to many New York City commuters, is conveniently located approximately 28 minutes away from New York City via Metro-North Railroad. Residents of all ages and interests enjoy myriad cultural, social, and recreational activities through a variety of local groups, clubs, and organizations.
 

History

Pelham enjoys the distinction of being the oldest town in Westchester County. The area within present-day Pelham was purchased in 1654 by Thomas Pell from the Siwanoy Nation (siwanoynation.org). The land originally included not only the present Pelham Bay Park east of Hutchinson River, but also City Island. About 7 years later, the town was reduced in size to its current 2.2-square-mile configuration.
 

Transporation

The Hutchinson River Parkway, Interstate 95, and the Boston Post Road are among the main roadways that service the area.
 
Public Transportation: The New Haven Line, Metro-North Railroad, and Grand Central Terminal are approximately 28 minutes away.
 
Amtrak – the closest location is in the New Rochelle stop on the NE corridor line.
 

Recreation

The town’s Recreation Department offers residents a host of youth and adult sports leagues, seasonal activities, and day trips to sites of interest. In addition, several groups within the town sponsor trips and recreational events throughout the year.

Nature & Conservation

Nearby Pelham Bay Park/Orchard Beach is the largest park in New York City with over 3,000 acres of forest, marshland, and rocky coastline, as well as a one-mile swimming beach. The varied habitat supports a diversity of wildlife throughout the park. A swamp in the Central Woodlands is a prime environment for migratory songbirds.
