Welcome to Larchmont

Located in southern Westchester County, Larchmont and Mamaroneck are picturesque communities on the shore of Long Island Sound. Steps from the water’s edge, they boast an attraction that is theirs alone — over twelve miles of combined shoreline with scenic harbors, marinas, sandy beaches, and more than 323 acres of parkland.

Those who live here quickly become spoiled by the wealth of recreational opportunities and the picture-postcard views of water, sky, and sailboats. Residents agree that while New York City is a half-hour commute away, they don’t have to leave their own backyard to enjoy the same first-rate culture.

History

Mamaroneck, one of the oldest settlements in Westchester County, was originally established by the Siwanoys, an Algonquin tribe, at the mouth of the river and head of the harbor. The land was purchased from the Siwanoys in 1661 by John Richbell, a London merchant. In 1778, the Town of Mamaroneck was created by an Act of the New York State Legislature.

Larchmont was discovered by the Dutch in 1614. A century after the British and Dutch began to purchase the land, which was inhabited by an indigenous population, the first Quaker refugees from New England and then wealthy New Yorkers began to establish estates in the area, leading to the village’s incorporation in 1891.

Transportation

Larchmont and Mamaroneck are stops on Metro North Railroad with commuting times of approximately 31 and 35 minutes to Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal. There is bus transportation via Bee-Line, Para-Transit, along with taxi service.

Recreation

Residents of Larchmont and Mamaroneck cite the recreational facilities as one of the area’s most attractive features. They include boating, swimming, golf, tennis, jogging, biking, paddle tennis, ice skating, and hockey. The mission of the Recreation Department is to enrich the quality of life for residents. It provides a wide variety of leisure and cultural activities, facilities, and services that encourage health, fitness, relaxation, and enjoyment. The department offers opportunities for community involvement with its schedule of special annual events.

Natural Recreation

Parks and playgrounds are scattered throughout the towns and villages, some favorites including Harbor Island Park, Manor Park, Flint Park, Florence Park, and Hommocks Park Ice Rink. Nature lovers can hike through three forest sanctuaries and trails at the Larchmont Reservoir. The parks offer active and passive recreation, with grassy areas, jogging and walking paths, playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, and sports fields.

Arts & Culture

The Emelin Theatre for Performing Arts, adjacent to the nearby Mamaroneck Library, presents over 200 performances a year, from jazz and classical concerts to drama and dance.
