Welcome to Bronxville P.O./Yonkers

The City of Yonkers in Westchester County has 4.5 miles of stunning Hudson River waterfront, and at a tad over 20 square miles in size, Yonkers is New York’s fourth-largest city and the largest in the county.

Yonkers is also coveted for its lively culture, quiet, residential, tree-lined streets, accessibility, desirability, quality of life, commitment to education, as well as its wealth of entertainment and recreational opportunities. History

Yonkers evolved from a small farm town in the 1700’s to a growing and bustling city through land purchases and the construction of saw mills and grist mills, taverns, general stores, and blacksmith shops.

Through the decades, Yonkers became the home of countless inventors and innovators, including Elisha Otis, who invented the safety elevator in Yonkers in 1854; Charles Harvey, who built the first elevated train line on Greenwich Street in Manhattan; and Edwin Armstrong, who invented the FM radio in 1912.

Fast forward to the 20th century, and Bakelite, the first totally synthetic plastic, was invented by Leo Baekeland and manufactured in Yonkers until the late 1920s. Aside from its role in manufacturing, Yonkers played a major role in the development of sports recreation in the United States when, in 1888, Scottish-born John Reid founded the country’s first golf course in Yonkers, Saint Andrew’s Golf Club. Yonkers’ manufacturing sector has also shown a resurgence in the early 21st century.

Transportation

Yonkers is a commuter-friendly city. Five major highways connect Yonkers with neighboring communities in the region, and nearly four Metro-North Railroad stations serve the city, which is situated about 25 minutes from Midtown Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal. Metro North Railroad and the Bee-Line Bus System serve Yonkers.

Recreation

Those who enjoy the great outdoors will find a plethora of options in Yonkers, which boasts waterfront parks and walkways, pools, a skating center, a marina, several golf courses, and the 161-acre Tibbetts Brook Park, which features several hiking trails. The Hudson River is a popular draw for kayaking and boating.

Historical Sites

While there are numerous historic sites throughout the city, which has a rich history, St. John’s Episcopal Church on Hudson Street and the Sherwood House on Tuckahoe Road are two of the most interesting. St. John’s Church, which dates to 1752, was built by Frederic Philipse III, a Loyalist during the American Revolution. A coveted feature of the church is a bell that was created in 1808 by Colonel Benjamin Hanks. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Sherwood House, built in 1740 by Thomas Sherwood, also has an interesting past: George Washington passed by the structure as he inspected Tuckahoe Road during the American Revolution, as did British General Sir Banastre Tarleton.
